Insecure – Second Look

I have done a lot of posts on the first look at loads of shows but I don’t think I have ever done a follow up post on any shows so I have decided that between now and say September when new seasons of network shows start, I need to do wrap up posts on all the stuff I fancy watching some more because right now my box of posts is looking like it is full of half eaten cookies and I don’t like that. Let’s get some order into this shall we?

I saw that Insecure season 2 is round the corner so I thought that’d be a good place to start. There are only 8 episodes in season 1 and I had seen the first two. I thought if I don’t like it, I’ll write it off as approximately 3 hours of my not so precious time wasted.

To recap, after watching the first two episodes, I wasn’t impressed. I didn’t get why everyone was so excited about it. If there are only 8 episodes, I figure the action would start right off the bat? I didn’t get that with the first two episodes of Insecure. Episodes 3 and 4 didn’t do anything for me either. If I had to wait one week for each episode to come out, I’d have completely forgotten about the show. When I start fiddling with my phone midway through a show, that tells you all you need to know about my feelings.

Somewhere between episodes 5 and 6, the magic happened! The penny dropped! Exciting things started happening. I tossed my phone and looked forward to finishing all the remaining episodes. I am a bit torn about whether or not to go into details because there might be a couple of spoilers in there. Whatever, I’ll go for it.

I think the point things turned for me was when Issa cheated on her boyfriend. Ironically, at the same time, her boyfriend started sucking less at life. I don’t know if it was just me but I got the feeling that Issa really wants to be with Daniel but she’s just worried about her boyfriend’s feelings. I wonder how the situation between her and her boyfriend plays out in season 2.

Speaking of Issa’s boyfriend, I found the strip club scene in the last episode really funny. When the stripper says it’s $200 for head and $400 to smash I’m like what!? $400 is too much for a piece of ass. I hoped he turned it down because you know he just started his new job and I was sure he didn’t have $400 yet. If he did, he sure as hell wasn’t wasting it on no ass!. I like how they didn’t tell us whether he accepted the offer or not. Towards the end of the episode, we see him getting his $400 worth of ass.

Can I just say that Tiffany’s husband is either gay or is cheating on her. By the way, Jidenna has a recurring role for about 2 episodes playing the love interest of another Nigerian – Yvonne Orji aka Molly.

All in all, the show reminds me of a cross between girls and sex and the city. It’s not one of those that ends on a cliff hanger after each episode but as time passes, you start to warm to one or more of the characters and you want to keep up with what’s going on in their life. It is definitely worth a watch and I am looking forward to season 2.
